Singer/ songwriter/ producer Riwo has a long, accomplished record in the Alberta music scene -- known for fronting the pan-African pop band Melafrique, as well as collaborations with everyone from K-Riz to PlanIT Sound to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. She has a lot on the go these days – even for her! She's performing at the Yardbird Suite February 23, 2024 as a feature guest with the Biboye Onanuga Blacktet; then February 24 sees her take part in a Black History Month celebration at the Arden Theatre in St. Albert called Taste of Africa, which sees her take the stage alongside the likes of Aurah, Ntwali, Socafit and the Trincan Steel Opera. Most excitingly, Riwo has just released her full-length debut solo album! Grown Child finds her reflecting on her identity as a young Black Albertan, embracing diverse elements from her cultural heritage and current community, plus finding her own voice with this record that's taken something like 12 years to create. It encompasses a musical journey that's taken her all the way from her childhood in Nigeria to tackling grown-up issues in the here and now. Last week, the album debuted on CKUA's New Music Chart at the #1 position! Riwo joined us on Alberta Morning to spin some music from Grown Child, share some of her musical story and to reflect on the remarkable moment she's experiencing right now.
